Dartmouth on the Appalachian Trail
Dartmouth College has a long-standing and unique connection to the Appalachian Trail. Dartmouth's involvement dates back to the early days of the trail's construction, with the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC) playing a significant role in the planning and maintenance of the trail in the region. Founded in 1909, the DOC is the oldest and largest collegiate outing club in the United States, and its members were instrumental in laying out and blazing sections of the trail through the White Mountains and surrounding areas. Even today, Dartmouth students remain actively engaged in trail stewardship, embodying the college’s deep-rooted tradition of outdoor leadership and environmental responsibility.
