Sound an Echo at UVMC
IN SOUND AN ECHO, RACHAEL KILGOUR & SARA PAJUNEN create and perform modern, minimalist arrangements of old songs that have stood the test of time. Kilgour is an award-winning songwriter whose sincere and lyric-driven work ('a heartfelt slice of indie folk' [Billboard]) has been heard at Lincoln Center and The Sundance Film Festival. A classically-trained violinist studying contemporary improvisation, Pajunen is a sound artist, composer and an acclaimed progressive practitioner of Nordic folk music with "extra elusive appeal..." (fRoots). SOUND AN ECHO is interested in bringing new life to the old and remembering how to sing together again. Sara Pajunen will also offer a Nordic Fiddling workshop at UVMC at 5 pm. Sara Pajunen is a violinist, composer and sound artist based in Duluth, MN. Centering projects around themes of culture, immigration, and home, she has released six albums in connection with her Finnish ancestry - including the most recent Aallotar recording on Nordic Notes. In 2018, Pajunen launched 'Mine Songs,' a long-term project that explores the altered landscape of the Mesabi Iron Range through sound. Pajunen was the 2015-16 Finlandia Foundation Performer of the Year and her work has received funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Jerome Foundation, Koneen Säätiö, and the Arts Council of Finland. She holds music degrees in both the United States and Finland and has studied in the Contemporary Improvisation Department at New England Conservatory.
