Through dance, live music and vivid projections, "Written in Water" explores the heights of ecstasy and the depths of longing to connect the human with the transcendent.
"Soulful, imaginative and rhythmically contagious" (New York Times), the Minneapolis-based Bharatanatyam-style ensemble Ragamala is highly acclaimed for creating a genre of performance that brings together a Western aesthetic with an Indian ethos. Inspired by the second-century Indian board game Paramapadam (the precursor to Snakes & Ladders), Written in Water explores ecstasy, longing and transcendence in Hindu and Sufi thought. The dancers move through a space transformed by vivid projections, to a score composed and performed by Amir ElSaffar—known for his distinctive alchemy of contemporary jazz trumpet and Iraqi maqam—with a Carnatic musical ensemble.
